Where do you train? Across Scotland for Touch and in Edinburgh and Glasgow for rowing

Nickname: Rubage, Roops, Rubydoo (and Ru is actually short for Ruth…)

Education: University of Edinburgh, Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Medicine

  • First sporting success? Winning the Edinburgh-Glasgow Boat race in my first rowing season.  It was an incredible moment for the 9 of us that raced that day.

Finest sporting moment? Beating Jersey in our final game at the Touch World Cup 2011 to finish 7th in the World.  I scored a try in the last few minutes of the game which helped ensure our victory.  We’d really come together and developed as a team throughout the season and it was a great way to end our tournament.

Your tip for the top: Learn from everything you do and make the most of every opportunity.  Never give up.

First international / ‘big time’ call-up: Being selected into the Scotland Touch training squad in 2009.  I had only just started playing Touch but I loved it immediately, it was exciting to develop so quickly by being given the opportunity to play with the best in the country.

How do you feel when you know you are representing your team / country? I feel an incredible sense of pride and achievement and also, a sense of responsibility and a drive to perform at my best.  It’s an amazing feeling to be part of a team with a united goal and vision.

How and why did you get involved in your sport? I started playing Touch following a neck injury playing contact rugby.  I got involved in social Touch played on the meadows in Edinburgh, joined a super league team and developed from there.

What is your favourite moment in the history of sport? Rebecca Romero becoming the first British woman to ever compete in two different sports at the   Olympic games.

Who has been the biggest influence on your sporting career? My mum.  I hope I make her proud.

Any family connections to sport? My Mum and Dad represented their counties in hockey and rugby respectively.

Who has been your toughest opponent and why? One of my closest friends and I were competing for the same seat in our Universities top boat.  At the time it was hard to not let the competition come between our friendship, but we are even closer now because of it.

  • Three words that describe you: Motivated, competitive and passionate

Who would you most like to meet? Shane Williams…. he’s one of the best and I’d like some fancy footwork tips.

What is your most prized possession? My road bike, although I don’t get to use it as much as I’d like.

What is your biggest passion away from sport? My friends and family.  I train a lot so I always appreciate a free day or weekend to spend at home or with my friends.  I’m lucky to have such a supportive family and friends who understand my commitments and are always behind me.

Favourite sport(s) other than your own? I’m a big sports fan!  I particularly like watching rugby league and union, and I also enjoy playing badminton and cycling.

Top tips to relax? Sleeping!  Rowing involves a lot of early mornings so it’s always nice to enjoy a lie-in!

What is your ultimate ambition? To realise my full potential as a Touch player.  I also want to play an important role in the development and growth of the game.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time? I would love to still be enjoying and being successful in competitive sport, especially Touch.  I also really enjoy coaching and would like to get more involved with that.  I can’t imagine not having sport in my life and I think being able to develop new talent is a really exciting prospect.
